What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?

Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional gastrointestinal condition that affects the digestive system. It can also impact your bowel movements. One day they can be completely normal and the next day bowel movements can appear atypical.

Sometimes, IBS can be confused with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as they can have similar symptoms. However, they are not the same condition. Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis are examples of IBD. Both of which cause inflammation in the digestive tract. IBS on the other hand, does not lead to an inflammatory response in the digestive system.

People with IBD can have an increased risk of developing bowel cancer or colon cancer. This isn’t the case for those with irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome can be referred to as chronic IBS as it is a condition where you will need to manage the symptoms long-term. People with IBS can experience periods of great discomfort, which can impact the way they live their lives. This is where lifestyle changes and eating habits can help improve the symptoms.

IBS symptoms

Many of our patients come to our clinic in London with varying IBS symptoms. This is normal, as it affects some people more severely than others. The symptoms of Irritable bowel syndrome can flare up after having a big meal or when you are experiencing a lot of stress.

The first types of symptoms you are likely to notice are digestive symptoms such as stomach pain and bloating. IBS sufferers in London may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

The most common and specific symptoms of IBS include:

  • Abdominal pain or cramps
  • Changes in your bowel movement from constipation to diarrhoea (or both)
  • Stomach bloating and gassiness
  • The need to have a bowel movement without being able to have one

Other symptoms can be:

  • Little or no energy
  • Nausea
  • Heartburn

How can a dietitian help treat irritable bowel syndrome IBS?

One of the most frustrating parts of living with IBS is that there isn’t a one size fits all approach to treatment. You may have tried medication to relieve your symptoms, but are yet to notice any results. Perhaps, you’ve given cognitive behavioural therapy a go? While these treatments can be effective for some patients, they don’t always look at what triggers your IBS.

With the support of The DNA Dietitian, you can get to the root cause of your IBS. Not only can you learn how to manage the symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloating, but you can find out about the foods that trigger your IBS.

What’s more, you don’t need to have blood tests to get this information. All it takes is a simple saliva sample to get the ball rolling. From this, Rachel can see what the underlying issues of your IBS may be and develop a personalised treatment plan.

It also takes the guess work out of whether adopting a diet such as a low FODMAP diet, or a specific carbohydrate diet will work for you. With the help of The DNA Dietitian, you will get a diet and lifestyle plan that will suit your needs and work for you. Not only will it help get your symptoms under control, but it can help improve your quality of life.
