A qualified nutritional therapist vs a registered dietitian – what is the difference?

With so much information out there on nutrition it is easy to get confused by it all. Because of this, many people see a nutritional therapist and a dietitian as the same. This is not the case. It’s true that they are both nutritional professionals. However, they both hold different levels of expertise and training.

Here is a breakdown of what a nutritional therapist is vs what a dietitian does:

Nutritional therapists

What they do:

  •  Look at underlying causes of ill health and not what causes them. They use this to provide nutrition and lifestyle support
  • Focus on correcting nutritional and biochemical imbalances by advising on what toxins or allergens to avoid. They can also recommend the use of high-dose vitamins.
  • They do not diagnose or treat medical conditions. However, they can work alongside other healthcare professionals to support those with health issues such as a dietitian.

One key takeaway is that a nutritional therapist is not protected by law. This means that anyone can call themselves one. If they register with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), they can refer to themselves as a registered nutritional therapist.

A dietitian

What they do:

  • They are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Work with both healthy and sick people
  • They will look at your current diet, medical history and your eating patterns
  • Advise people with specific dietary needs such as patients diagnosed with a medical condition. For example, those with diabetes, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or cancer.
  • Because a dietitian is a regulated healthcare professional, they are qualified to treat people with health conditions including weight management, food allergies and food intolerances.

When working with The DNA Dietitian, you will be working with a team who can help you achieve different health goals.  As a registered dietitian, Rachel works with patients suffering from health issues such as IBS and digestive health problems.

The tailored advice you receive will help you on your way to leading a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. And because it’s based on your DNA, the dietary advice you receive will set you up for life. This means no more fad diets or second guessing what you should be eating.

What will happen during my first nutrition consultation?

It is important to come for consultation. It’s our chance to get to know you and ask you questions about your health goals. It’s also your chance to get to know more about us and how we can help you.

During your consultation we will look at the following:

1.     Body composition

2.     Clinical and medical history

3.     Medications you are taking

4.     Blood tests you have had done

5.     Any issues you are facing at the moment

From this, we can then start looking at your diet. What you eat on a daily basis, your likes and dislikes, and if you have any allergies.

In just under an hour, Rachel or a member of her team will be able to build a full picture of where you are at now and where you want to be. This is where we will start building your personalised nutrition plan.

Our patients see the best results when they attend regular follow up appointments.
