What are the benefits of nutritional therapy?

Many fad diets that are on the market adopt a one size fits all approach. The focus is often on restricting food intake, instead of understanding which foods work best for you. This is why so many people struggle with weight loss and maintaining a healthy and balanced diet.

Nutritional therapy looks at the science behind our nutrition. It takes a more holistic approach to how the food we eat and the lifestyle we lead affects our body’s health and wellbeing. It can also help identify any food groups you may be sensitive to, or food intolerances that are causing health concerns.

When you work together with The DNA Dietitian, your genes will provide all the information we need to support your nutritional requirements. From this, we will develop a tailored diet plan that will address your long-term needs. What’s more, because your DNA never changes, the dietary guidelines you receive can be applied throughout your life.

Besides weight loss, with support from The DNA Dietitian, you may also see other health benefits including:

  •     Achieve optimal nutrition
  •     Boost mood and increased energy levels
  •     Improved long term health
  •     Reduce risk of disease
  •     Improve gut health
  •     Help boost your immunity
  •     Balanced hormones
  •     Create better sleeping patterns
  •     Support better mental health

The difference between a nutritionist, nutritional therapist and dietitian for nutritional therapy

With so much information out there about nutrition and healthy lifestyle changes, how do you know which applies to you? This also includes finding the right professional who can support you on your nutrition journey.

So how do you know which professional will provide the right support for you? Their titles may sound like they all do the same thing, but they each hold different registrations and qualifications.

Nutritionists

Nutritionists are called on for general nutritional support. They can help you with advice about food and healthy eating. A nutritionist is not qualified to provide help or information about special diets for people with medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Only individuals registered with the Association for Nutrition (AfN) can be registered nutritionists.

Nutritionists tend to work in non-clinical settings such as in Government, the food industry, teaching and in sports and exercise industries. There are instances where nutritionists work in medical environments such as with the NHS, but this is only alongside registered dieticians.

Nutritional therapists

A nutritional therapist supports people who are looking to improve their general health through changes in diet and nutrition. They look for ways to restore nutritional imbalances in the body through a bespoke diet and lifestyle plan.

It’s a complementary therapy that is not regulated by law. They look to address imbalances in the body by providing advice around toxins and allergens. Nutritional therapists may also recommend the use of nutritional supplements including high-dose vitamins.

Anyone can call themselves a nutritional therapist. However, those who have undergone accredited training can register with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC).

Dietitian

Most of the time, people who are looking for nutritional therapy need a dietitian. This is because dietitians are the only qualified nutrition professionals able to diagnose and treat people with nutritional issues including weight management.

As medical experts in nutrition they are able to treat both healthy people and those with health concerns. This includes clinical conditions such as eating disorders, food allergies and intolerances and irritable bowel syndrome.

Any professional calling themselves a dietitian needs to be registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).
