Holistic Nutritionist

04/05/2021

A holistic nutritionist could be of benefit to anyone who wants to achieve a diet and attitude towards food that helps with all aspects of their health.

The saying ‘we are what we eat may sound glib, or appear to be a cliche, but it is also based on truth.

Everything we eat and drink contributes to our overall wellness; so too what we don’t eat and drink.

The vitamins we are short on, the energy or key dietary requirements we may be neglecting.

A holistic nutritionist will work to create a dietary plan that improves every aspect of health – physical and mental and overall wellness – they can also work to help individuals, or create plans and offer advice to help with the whole family.

The Five Areas of Holistic Health

Five areas of holistic health are commonly recognised – these are:

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Social
  • Spiritual
  • Intelligent

To varying degrees, a holistic nutritionist can help with all five – though clearly, they may have a more direct impact on physical health, for instance, than spiritual.

However, diet has an impact on all five – if our physical health is enhanced, our mental health follows, issues such as tiredness and fatigue far less likely, this in turn enabling us to focus on involved topics, these potentially including our spiritual beliefs.

This can be linked to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, with physiological needs at the very bottom – i.e. the fundamentals. Food and water are among items at this level, so too sleep. If this level is not addressed, if diet is not optimised then there is far less prospect of items higher up such as esteem and self-actualisation ever being achieved.

How to Find A Holistic Nutritionist

Finding a holistic nutritionist is both easy, but also a process where care should be taken.

To explain.

Nutritionist is not a protected term – with or without holistic attached – and so virtually anyone can set up a website and call themselves a holistic nutritionist. They can then offer dietary advice that may or may not be beneficial.

Often, this advice will be a general, one-size-fits-all type approach, perhaps based on general good dietary advice or, in some cases, based on little more than a whim.

Often, people searching for a nutritionist actually want a dietitian, a dietitian is a medically qualified expert and their standards are closely monitored. Becoming a dietitian takes many years of training.

Dietitians can work with patients who have medical conditions, a nutritionist is not allowed to do this, a dietitian also works with other medical professionals.

This is truly holistic, the advice they offer also factors in all other aspects of a person’s medical history; they know how to liaise with other healthcare professionals to do what is best for that person.

A dietitian is still holistic, their advice improves physical health and with it mental health too; they just do so in a way that is science-based and proven to work.

Truly Personalised Holistic Dietary Advice

You may have heard of Nutrigenomics, this is a wonderful new breakthrough within dietary advice; it does not replace the work of dietitians, instead it builds upon it.

Nutrigenomics sees a blood sample taken and this then shows key genetic information about the person, unlocking secrets about how they interact with different food types. Food allergies that would have been almost impossible to spot are detected; the information also shows how people should tailor their diet.

How, for instance, should they get their energy – the balance of fats vs carbs vs protein. Which vitamins do they naturally need more of?

The full report – as can be seen in the sample – contains a level of detail that would be overwhelming to those without training. This is where it combines with the skill of a dietitian who has specifically also trained in Nutrigenomics.

The nutrigenomics, which is FDA approved and was developed by world-renowned professors adds extra nuance, it ensures the dietitian has more information so as to tailor the diet that bit more and make it truly bespoke. It makes the diet more holistic.

How A Holistic Nutritionist Can Help

A holistic nutritionist can help people both tailor their diet so that their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing is improved, but also give people the knowledge so they can continue to make healthy decisions.

They can evaluate someone’s existing diet and lifestyle and then offer advice based upon this.

Meal plans can be created, these fully bespoke for the person or family seeking this level of help.

The meals can be tailored to specific goals such as weight loss, managing stress or boosting energy, whilst also improving overall health.

The holistic nutritionist can teach and inform groups, for instance working with those in a school setting to inspire youngsters to value a healthy diet.

A holistic nutritionist can offer practical advice, they can go on shopping trips with you or evaluate your online shopping basket and then suggest any problems, but also point out where you may be getting a lot right.

Perhaps the main thing is that they can working with you and leave you confident that your diet is suitable for your overall health and also any specific goals. T

his can be hugely motivational – once we know we are on the right track it is far easier to then stay on this track.
